Get Out of the City

Just outside of Petersburg there are many great adventures to embark on. In and around town, hiking trails take visitors on a scenic adventure. From wheelchair-accessible trails to single-plank-board crossings, there are trails for every skill level.

Hop in the car to visit Mitkof Island to see the largest temperate rain forest in the world. There are plenty of adventures awaiting. An accessible boardwalk trail leads visitors to Blind River Rapids fishing area and other trails lead to berry patches and gorgeous hillsides. Visitors can also put in a canoe or kayak to paddle around or even head to the Three Lakes area where rowboats are available to borrow and explore.

In addition to Mitkof Island, visitors can take a guided kayaking trip to nearby glaciers or to explore the surrounding islands. The Petersburg Rangers District of the Tongass National Forest boasts 1.6 million acres of forest to explore. Take off an adventure to discover thousands of miles of shoreline, impressive icefields, mountain peaks and surrounding islands.

From wildlife viewing to tidal pool discoveries, there is plenty to see at Eagles Roost Park, Sandy Beach and the Wrangell Narrows.
