Go for a Hike

Visitors interested in everything from a short stroll or a multi-day hike can find it in Valdez. With some of the tallest coastal mountain peaks in the world, any hike taking off from Valdez promises to be nothing less than picturesque. One notable hiking trail near Solomon Gulch Hatchery, the John Hunter Memorial Trail was featured by survival expert Bear Grylls as one of the world’s best hikes. The trail is well maintained, and hikers can spot bears, eagles and more on their way to Solomon Gulch as they pass by several streams, bridges and waterfalls. Another notable hike is the Homestead Trail. It winds through a cottonwood forest before arriving at a stunning ocean view. Wildlife isn’t the only thing to spot on this hike—on nice days, kite surfers can be spotted catching the wind and ocean waves.
